Pedicabs regulation letter from Chairman

Posted on: 17/04/2020

Dear RSMSJ member

I hope you and your families remain safe and well.

Pedicabs have been the cause of significant nuisance for many years now. We have lobbied hard to get them regulated or banned outright. However we have been repeatedly told that the only way to do this is through an Act of Parliament.

Former leader of Westminster City Council Nickie Aiken, now our Member of Parliament for the Two Cities, has been allocated a time slot to introduce a bill in parliament next week, under a 10-minute rule bill procedure , which if it is passed into law, would bring pedicabs in line with taxis and private hire services. Under the proposals drivers would need a licence from Transport for London (TfL) to operate, TfL would be given the power to regulate the prices they charge and the vehicles they use would have be of a safe standard.

The title and short introduction of the Bill are:

PEDICABS (LONDON) That leave be given to bring in a Bill to provide for the regulation of the carrying of passengers in Greater London by pedal cycles and power-assisted pedal cycles for hire or reward; and for connected purposes.

To be clear, the Bill aims to regulate the provision of Pedicabs in London through TfL, not to ban them outright.

If you support this change and want to see greater regulation please click on the link here to register your support and encourage your friends and neighbours to do the same.

As the bill has been tabled to be put forward on the 21st April, next Tuesday, this will need to be done as a matter of urgency.

Kind regards
Richard Cutt
Chairman
