Oxford Street traffic free works and what you need to know
Posted on: 17/09/2026Works are continuing in preparation for Oxford Street to become traffic free between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street.
A number of changes are being made to surrounding streets, including changes to traffic movements, parking, taxi ranks, bus facilities and pedestrian crossings.
Key updates
Great Castle Street West
Kerb realignment works are underway and are expected to be completed by 22 September 2026. There is currently no access to Regent Street from Great Castle Street West, although loading and unloading remains possible.
Great Portland Street
Works near Great Castle Street are expected to continue until 27 September 2026. There is currently no right turn from Oxford Street into Great Portland Street, and Great Portland Street is southbound only between Great Castle Street and Oxford Street.
Margaret Street
Changes to the ambulance bay, taxi facilities and a new bus stand are expected to be completed by 18 September 2026.
Market Place
From Thursday, 17 September, four parking bays will be replaced with three disabled parking bays. The works are expected to be completed by 18 September.
Marylebone Lane
Changes to parking and loading restrictions have been introduced on the eastern side of the street.
Further changes to come
The following works are still being scheduled:
- Closure of James Street at its junction with Oxford Street
- Further kerb changes at Great Castle Street East
- New bus stands on Great Portland Street
- Three new disabled parking bays and an extended taxi rank on Duke Street
- Changes to traffic signals at the Orchard Street and Wigmore Street junction
- Changes to the Oxford Street and Great Portland Street junction, including a new pedestrian crossing
- Additional safety measures on Oxford Street and surrounding side streets
- Temporary public realm improvements along Oxford Street
Dates for these works will be confirmed once the necessary permits have been finalised.
Please note: where night works are required, working hours will be limited to 22:00 to 05:00.
