Urgent: Proposed Pedestrianisation of Oxford Street

Posted on: 14/10/2025

Dear Residents,

We are writing with urgency regarding the Mayor’s plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street, under the newly formed Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) a scheme that will have a direct and lasting impact on our community.

Control of Oxford Street and surrounding blocks has been removed from Westminster and Camden Councils under sole control of MDC silencing local voices and sidelining residents' concerns. Decisions now rest solely with the Mayor, whose agenda prioritises redevelopment over residents with no accountability for potential issues arising and a poor retail offer.

The proposed scheme raises serious concerns, including:
• Reduced access for emergency services and people with mobility issues
• Traffic gridlock from rerouted buses, taxis, and delivery vehicles through residential streets
• Increased pollution and antisocial behaviour in quiet neighbourhoods
• Over £100 million of taxpayer money spent without public consultation
• A likely shift toward a late-night economy, bringing crime and nuisance
• Years of construction noise, dust, and disruption

Westminster Councillor Tim Barnes warns: “We’re going to see traffic pushed onto the tiny side streets that really can’t take it.”

We support investment in Oxford Street, but not at the expense of residents’ quality of life. These proposals are being rushed through with little consultation and risk irreversible damage to our neighbourhoods.

If you oppose or wish to understand these plans further, please contact us on info@rsmsj.com to share your views or get involved. Every voice matters and together we can challenge this damaging scheme.

The 21st of September saw Oxford Street trial Traffic-Free Day hosted by the Mayor of London. Please get in touch with us to share your views on how the event went and share any photos.
